Destilería Carúpano is located in the fertile and steamy Hacienda Altamira within the Carúpano Valley in Macarapana. Hacienda Altamira could have been the paradigm of the 250-year history of Carúpano´s rum, which was founded in 1762 by the Spanish Captain Félix del Fierro. Its diosyncrasies show how much of the cycles that marked the history of Old Carúpano rum, from its´ foundation, passing through the pioneers to the present.

It was precisely at the Hacienda Altamira where aging process was experienced for the first time, when the spirits produced and not marketed were stored in barrels imported from Europe that originally had contained wines – hence the name of old rum. For a product that required a careful and delicate conception, more typical of liquor artistry than of the simple technique of a good distillation.

Destilería Carúpano, as heir and reservoir of those deep and important traditions, selects higher spirits exclusively and only uses the purest water from its own fertile springs that have, for over two centuries, guaranteed a continuous supply of extraordinarily, strenghen its fragrance and delicacy, create astringency, help to infuse the color and incorporate other flavors originated by the previous use of the barrel to age Bourbon.

The remaining percentage of the nature of Carúpano’s rums is subject to other factors also involved in the aging process, such as the condition and history of each barrel; the design of the warehouse where the barrels rest and how they are placed; the geographical location of these storehouses; the special microclimate that develops in the valley where the Hacienda Altamira is located, where the cane destillate matures and finally, the length if time it is aged for.

Tasting Notes:

The rum displays an amber color with hints of clean gold and thick leglets which amble slowly into the rum below. Sweet aromas of vanilla, plantain comfiture, toasted almonds and hazelnut toffee with a balanced alcohol flavor. The initial entry into the mouth is persistent and strong of coconut, vanilla, caramel and toasted nuts punctuated by alcohol which reaches the throat in a well-balanced and v elvety finish.
